Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend around a decade in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in point of fact several podiatry programmes are located inside these academic institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received extensive health care training with a concentration on conditions regarding the feet and ankles. They are qualified to treat concerns extending from familiar problems for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are even more complex for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have considerable surgical training which provide them the skill required to perform surgery on those concerns that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against many conditions which the feet usually encounter.
